The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus is organizing a ceremony for the conferral of an honorary doctorate of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus to Matthew Santamouris, Professor of High- Performance Architecture at the University of New South Wales in Australia. The ceremony is a special public event, the opening and closing of which will be announced by the Rector of the University of Cyprus himself. During the ceremony, the work and personality of Professor Mattheos Santamouris will be presented, the relevant resolution of the Senate will be read by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the honoree will be vested with the University of Cyprus academic gown. The event, which is open to distinguished guests and the University community, will culminate with the keynote speech of the the honorary doctorate on October 30, 2024.
As part of the event, Mr. Santamouris will give a lecture entitled “Urban Climate Change is a major threat to Social Cohesion, Economic Prosperity, Environmental Quality and Urban Resilience. Policies and Technologies of Deterrence". The lecture aims to highlight the causes and magnitude of urban climate change, focus qualitatively and quantitatively on the multidimensional impacts on the urban population, explore and analyze the climate future of cities and finally present the latest technological advances and successes in the field in thermal urban containment and adaptation, integrated into a reforming and sustainable economic and social framework for the development, governance and operation of cities.
Mr. Santamouris is a distinguished professor of high architecture at the Annita Lawrence Chair of the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, Australia and has been included in the 1% of the most influential scientists for 6 consecutive years, while according to the ranking of Stanford University he is the 539th now most influential scientist in the world in all sciences. The event is held as part of the anniversary celebrations of the Polytechnic School of the University of Cyprus, for the completion of 20 years of studies and student life and 25 years since its establishment, as the first Polytechnic School in Cyprus.
